One branch of the NSW Electrical Trades Union (ETU) launched its fight against the NSW Government's further privatisation of the electricity network.

The NSW Coalition government wants to lease 49 per cent of the NSW poles and wires, with the exclusion of Essential Energy, if it wins an upcoming state election on March 28.

But the ETU says it is a bad idea that will cost jobs.

Around 100 ETU members met in Port Macquarie late last week to launch a campaign opposing the plan.

“Once they start to sell the farm, it's not too long before the entire farm goes,” ETU regional organiser Ben Lister told the ABC.

While some of the Essential Energy network has not been offered for sale yet, the union says it will be.

“I think it's only a matter of time before Essential Energy is the lone sheep in the paddock,” Mr Lister said.

“It's only a matter of time before it's snapped up as well.

“These guys are concerned about their jobs, they're concerned about prices and they're concerned about reliability.

“Rural and regional towns like Port Macquarie are the biggest losers when it comes to privatisation.

“All the money is spent on projects in Sydney,” Mr Lister said.

The ETU’s ‘Stop The Power Sell Off’ page on Facebook is advertising a series of upcoming meetings and protests on the topic.
