The Role
Wide Area and Space Surveillance Systems Project Office (WASS SPO) delivers and supports numerous wide area and space surveillance systems for the Australian Defence Force. Systems in service include the Jindalee Over the Horizon Radar (JORN), Overhead Persistent Infra-Red (OPIR) Satellite Surveillance System, C-Band Space Surveillance Radar, and soon to deliver Space Surveillance Telescope. Further projects in progress to deliver a Space Situational Awareness Mission System and additional space surveillance sensors.

The EL1 Deputy Chief Engineer - Space Surveillance Systems will support the development, contracting, acceptance, operation and sustainment of space surveillance capabilities for the ADF by providing engineering and technical leadership within the Space Surveillance Program.

The Deputy Chief Engineer will possess the technical knowledge, experience and expertise required to lead a multi-disciplinary engineering team, including Defence and industry personnel that undertakes activities across the program in the following areas: systems engineering, aerospace engineering, sensor technologies, data communications, data analytics for space situational awareness, and ICT for surveillance systems. The successful applicant will be required to work closely with Australian and international Defence and industry stakeholders, understand the Defence Capability Life Cycle and to build and continuously improve an Engineering Management System appropriate to the Space Surveillance Program needs.

WASS SPO is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Engineer who is able to provide engineering leadership with a record of delivering complex technical and engineering outcomes. As a suitable applicant, you will have exceptional stakeholder engagement, excellent verbal and written communication and negotiation skills, and will have a proven history of building, maintaining and growing productive and empowered teams.

The Deputy Chief Engineer will show the flexibility to respond to the changing context and shifting priorities of the Defence environment and the agility to realign resourcing to meet new demands. You will be a leader who provides support and guidance to your team to ensure they are sensitive to Defence strategic direction and equipped to excel in their capabilities.

We are seeking candidates with a diverse range of experience and backgrounds in engineering, including people who have gained their experience outside Defence and Government. You will be responsible for exercising and maintaining engineering competencies. You will possess a demonstrated understanding of the Defence Industry sector in Australia.

Key attributes and experience we are looking for:

  • Substantial track record of successful management of engineering projects in the space or aerospace domain using appropriate engineering practices;
  • Ability to deal with complex system installations, integration and technical regulatory requirements;
  • A thorough understanding of engineering disciplines;
  • Demonstrated experience managing teams in a complex environment;
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with ability to negotiate and build relationships with stakeholders;
  • Provide advice in all relevant engineering disciplines and management systems under broad direction;
  • Motivate and mentor developing engineers, aligning complementary skills and allocate resources in a manner that delivers results;
  • Sound commercial and business acumen and a demonstrated understanding of the Defence Industry sector in Australia; and
  • High-level organisational skills, self-drive and initiative with the ability to influence others to achieve tasks and business objectives.

A Minimum Negative Vetting 1 security clearance is required; however, there may be a requirement to undergo a Negative Vetting 2 or Positive Vetting security clearance.
