The Role

The position on offer provides a range of exciting opportunities in the Engineering area on one of the biggest Defence and Government procurements. The successful candidate will assume the role of the Naval Architect Manager for the Commonwealth. You will work in a dynamic and diverse environment as the Hull Manager a critical role being responsible for:

  • leading, managing and directing the Hull team, set work area priorities, manage workflows, develop strategies and evaluate business outcomes within the SEA5000 Platform Systems Engineering Section;
  • work collaboratively, communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders and influence the work of teams
  • work to tight deadlines
  • providing assurance advice to the Platform Systems Director related to the Naval Architecture and Outfitting and Furnishing aspects of the Hunter Class Frigate design;
  • identifying and managing risks/issues and opportunities related to the Naval Architecture and Outfitting and Furnishing aspects both inherent to the T-26 reference ship, as well as changes to those systems as part of the Hunter Class design and prototyping phase;
  • ensuring that the Hull Team conducts its activities in accordance with the endorsed engineering and project policies and procedures;
  • investigating and reporting on any Naval Architecture or Outfitting and Furnishing design non-conformances with the contracted design requirements, technical aspects of the design that will not be acceptable as part of the seaworthiness case of the Hunter Class Frigate and develop recommendations to address the issues; and
  • acting as the primary Point of Contact for engaging with external CoA stakeholders and Prime Contractor representatives for issues and activities related to Hunter Class Hull Aspects

The SEA5000 – Hunter Class Frigate Program within Ships Division is responsible for the delivery of nine Frigates and plays a significant role in the government’s plan to create a continuous naval shipbuilding industry. To achieve this, the Defence organisation requires a skilled and talented workforce, that is solution focused and outcome driven to deliver on this critical Government agenda.

The Engineering Design Strategy currently employed by SEA5000 Project is new to the Department of Defence and challenges the traditional systems engineering approach to design.
