The Department of Defence is recruiting to a highly specialised and unique role that offers the right candidate the opportunity to lead and shape projects that will contribute to a continuous Australia-wide naval shipbuilding enterprise that will serve Australia’s strategic and economic interests for many generations. 

The Deputy Secretary National Naval Shipbuilding is responsible for the implementation of the government's Naval Shipbuilding Plan. The Deputy Secretary is the single point of coordination and integration of shipbuilding matters within Defence and across government. The portfolio is broad and diverse, covering shipbuilding, submarines and shipyards. This includes responsibility for the naval shipbuilding projects and relevant sustainment activities; delivery of the four key enablers (infrastructure, workforce, industry reform and a national approach); and development and management of relationships with critical stakeholders across all levels of government and with industry to deliver the national endeavour.

The Deputy Secretary National Naval Shipbuilding will need to demonstrate the right skills and experience to be at the forefront of one of Defence and Australia’s most exciting and complex industrial undertakings. As one of the critical members of Defence’s senior leadership group, you must be able to promote a culture of innovation, collaboration and agility. You must also be able to effectively manage complex legislative and ethical frameworks to achieve capability outcomes for Defence and the Australian Government. The successful candidate will have a strong track record in leading large teams and a commitment to building strong and productive strategic relationships with Defence and core industry stakeholders.

Defence offers a competitive remuneration package, inclusive of superannuation and an Executive Vehicle Allowance. The position is located in Canberra and Defence will cover reasonable relocation expenses. 

Engagement will be on a non-ongoing basis for a period of up to three years. Applicants must be Australian citizens. This is a security-designated position and the successful applicant may be required to undergo a security assessment to the highest level.
