About the role

The Director Dam Safety role oversees the day-to-day operations of Dam Safety NSW, executing leadership, direction and management of the agency. The role leads audit and compliance activities to ensure effective dam safety and associated emergency planning and procedures by registered dam owners. This role encompasses broad engineering activity and implementation of safety standards in accordance with the Dam Safety Act 2015.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Reforming regulatory activity and staff culture to meet with current standards of excellence
  • Supervising regulatory staff and assessing the activities of dam owners of over 400 dams across the state, in order to create a safe environment for people and assets in NSW
  • Acting as the Chief Executive Officer for Dam Safety NSW and providing operational support in committee meetings
  • Developing and implementing sound governance arrangements in relation to business systems to ensure effective records management and the retention of reference materials
  • Maintaining networks with government and non-government research organisations, universities and other partners to maintain best practice dam safety methodologies
  • Representing Dam Safety NSW on inter-agency working parties including emergency matters, public forums, media and committees
  • Providing advice to the Minister, Chairperson and members of Dam Safety NSW.

The Total Remuneration Package for this role (including superannuation) starting from $187K, negotiable based onexperience.

About you

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A background in engineering related to asset management
  • Experience in a regulatory role or working closely with regulators (e.g. Dam Safety Committee, Environment Protection Authority)
  • The ability to influence via team building and negotiation
  • Experience with change management
  • The ability to empathise and listen to a diverse client group, whilst establishing and maintaining compliance

The mission of Dam Safety NSW is to regulate damn owners to ensure the safety of declared dams throughout the state. Among other things, Dam Safety NSW maintains a surveillance of declared dams, to examine and investigate the location, design, construction, reconstruction, extension, modification, operation and maintenance of prescribed dams, to obtain information and keep records on dams and to formulate measures to ensure the safety of dams in NSW. It identifies and monitors those dams which if failed have a potential to threaten downstream life, cause extensive property or environmental damage, or have a severe impact on public welfare.
