The mechanical technician role within the Field Operations team provides direct enablement of scientific research of national interest on the high sea, through delivering thorough and consistent operational practices on both existing and newly developed science equipment.

Specifically, the role will focus on delivering primary voyage objectives for the Marine National Facility’s, RV Investigator.  The successful candidate will be able to solve unique and sensitive science equipment problems that are mechanical by nature, both in the workshop and on the back deck of the ship. 

Your duties will include:

  • Under general direction participate in field trips and seagoing voyages, applying specialist knowledge to gain the safe and successful capture of scientific data for CSIRO.
  • To be able to travel to various interstate ports and participate on remote voyages, being up to 60 days long. 
  • Provide a minimum 85 days at sea in a twelve-month period.
  • Participate in the planning of projects and accept responsibility for carrying out major parts of the project, and typically make significant contributions to the interpretation and communication of results. 
  • Liaise with clients to determine their needs and take personal responsibility for their satisfaction, correct problems promptly and in a constructive manner. 
  • Develop original techniques, processes, or equipment especially when encountering new problems where methods are not defined, and initiative is required in seeking new approaches to improve the service provided and meet client needs.

Salary: AU$87068 to AU$98504 pa (pro-rata for part-time) + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

Essential:

  • Relevant mechanical trade certificate or equivalent relevant work experience in an applied field engineering role (mechanical).
  • High computer literacy using range of software tools.  Examples being office productivity, communication and visualisation drafting tools. 
  • Dogging and Rigging qualified with demonstrated experience and compliance knowledge. 
  • High understanding and practice in safe work compliance in both field and workshop situations
  • Strong demonstration and capability of mechanical tooling and machinery operations.
  • Licenced Forklift experienced operator

Desirable:

  • Marine science equipment understanding and demonstratable experience.
  • Evidence of practical experience, applying the essential criteria in a recent workplace setting. 
  • Demonstrated an ability to work at sea for extended periods

Eligibility
