The Position

CSIRO Manufacturing is seeking a Research Projects Officer to join a multi-disciplinary team within the Metal Industry Program. In this dynamic role, you will support innovative research developing different metal coatings for structural applications, durable alloys for wear applications and additive 3D printing.

Your duties will include:

  • Developing expertise for the interpretation of metallography samples and microstructures of alloy systems, such as ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, including iron, titanium, nickel and aluminium based alloys.
  • Participating in the development of new alloys through preparing metallographic samples, operating optical and scanning electron microscopes and taking hardness measurements.
  • Under guidance, conducting experiments utilising laser, PTA, cold spray and multi-axis robot to produce coatings and 3D printed samples.
  • Under guidance, programming robots to create deposition tool paths and integration and automation of different processing steps.
  • Stocktaking consumables commonly used in a typical metallography laboratory and sample processing and testing laboratory.

Salary:              $62k to $79k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful, you will need:

  • A Bachelors/Masters Degree in a relevant subject such as Engineering or Materials Science or equivalent experience in studies of metallic alloy materials, robotic and 3D deposition processes.
  • The ability to write codes for robots and to design and integrate hardware for process automation.
  • Experience in conducting experiments to produce samples utilising multi-axis robots, high power laser, PTA and cold spray systems.
  • The ability to characterise microstructures using techniques such as optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray imaging and diffraction.
  • To be able to evaluate alloy properties and performance such as tensile strength and elongation, fatigue ranking, corrosion resistance and wear.
