The position:

CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowships help facilitate the recruitment and development of our potential leaders. They provide valuable opportunities for scientists and engineers to launch their careers, extend professional networks and enhance future career prospects.

CSIRO Mineral Resources evaluates new lab and field technologies for exploration through cover and resource characterisation. Our multidisciplinary team of researchers and engineers integrates multiple mineralogical and geochemical data sets to address challenges in exploration or mining. To be successful in this Postdoctoral position with CSIRO Mineral Resources, you will require a solid understanding of the potential and limitations of the respective technologies for geological applications. You will also need the motivation to drive the application of science outcomes through to industry engagement.

You will:

  • undertake sample collection and preparation,
  • operate field and lab sensors,
  • ensure quality assurance and control,
  • interpret mineralogical and geochemical data,
  • report results to colleagues and clients as well as preparing research outcomes for publication in international journals.

In this position you must be able and willing to undertake regular travel within Australia, including trips to other CSIRO sites, as well as field visits to mine sites and to exploration camps.

Location:      Kensington (Perth) Western Australia
Salary:          AU $83k to AU 91k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

As a minimum requirement, you will hold a doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as geoscience or mineralogy. You will also have:

  • well developed interpersonal and communication skills, with a record of publications in quality, peer reviewed journals,
  • experience in acquisition, QA/QC and interpretation of reflectance spectra acquired from samples in the lab and field,
  • experience in preparing and analysing samples using methods such as XRD, FTIR and SEM,
  • experience in GIS and other geoscience-related software packages,
  • an understanding of mineral systems science and the impact of regolith formation on ore deposit footprints.

To be eligible for this postdoctoral fellowship, you must have less than 3 years of relevant research experience since gaining your PhD.
