Technical Officer in Electronics

  • Full-time, Continuing position. Base salary: $86k-92k p.a (HEO 6) plus annual leave loading and a generous employer’s contribution to superannuation. 

About the opportunity 

The Technical Officer, Electronics is part of a team of electrical and electronics staff, dedicated to developing electronic prototypes and ensures that laboratory and teaching equipment is properly maintained and functioning safely. The role will deliver expert technical support and advice to staff, academics and students by independently defining and developing projects with complex electronics and integrated software systems. All work conducted for teaching and research groups ensures that laboratory and teaching spaces meet the relevant Electrical, Work Health and Safety standards and are aligned to the University’s WHS policies and provisions.

Key accountabilities of the role are:

  • Collaborate with staff and students on teaching and research projects by providing expert advice and sound technical research support on electrical and electronic matters.
  • Design complex electrical and electronics systems to meet research and teaching needs using circuit design tools (such as Altium).
  • Constructs and commissions new electrical and electronic systems using a wide range of internal equipment and external supplier resources.
  • Integrate desktop hardware and software interfaces for electronics prototypes, including connectivity (such as USB, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth) to scientific instruments.
  • Envisions, creates and debugs software coding and instructions derived from the prototype’s functional requirements, using relevant programming environments (for example: C++ or Python).
  • Develops user interfaces, instruction sets and creates manuals to enable teaching, research staff and students to interact effectively with the newly created systems.
  • Completes an electrical safety risk assessment to determine and quantify any inherent electrical safety issues present in designed items and proposes, where appropriate, control measures.
  • Supports the Electrical and Electronics team with maintenance of electrical and electronic equipment.
  • Acquires materials or external resources as required for specific projects.

  • Tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering or trade qualifications in electronics.
  • Experience in design and construction of digital and analogue circuits including customized PCB design.
  • Experience in circuit design using commonly used modelling software packages (for example: Altium, MWO or AnSoft).
  • Demonstrated experience programming control and interface environments for electronics systems using coding software packages (for example: C++ Python).
  • Demonstrated understanding of high voltage lab equipment such as power supplies, amplifiers, pulsers and RF devices.
  • Capability of interpreting and working with complex electronic systems documents and circuit diagrams
  • Keen attention to detail and awareness of issues related to dealing with commercially sensitive or confidential information related to research.
  • Sound working knowledge and acute awareness of electrical safety standards
  • and ability to interpret and apply these standards within the laboratory and teaching environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to use initiative and prioritize workload during busy periods.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work, sometimes under pressure, with competing priorities and sometimes limited supervision.
