Principal Mechanical Design Engineer


Queensland Rail has a rare opportunity for a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer who will be primarily responsible for developing detailed mechanical designs and modifications, provide technical advice on rolling stock standards and items such as structural analysis, for the operation of our passenger rolling stock fleet. 

You will also oversee a small team, consisting currently of Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, Design Coordinator and two rotational Graduates.

A typical day in this role will involve a mix of tasks such as:  

  • Develop sub-system design modifications on existing rolling stock.
  • Oversee the preparation and development of design documents.
  • Review technical standards, specifications for rolling stock and associated equipment to ensure performance, operational and safety requirements are fulfilled.  
  • Review the designs of new rolling stock.
  • Monitor rolling stock performance and reliability to achieve safe and more economical operation.
  • Mentor and coach reporting staff to maximise team performance by providing performance feedback, advice, encouragement, training and professional development.

About you:

We are specifically looking for candidates with design engineering experience as you will be primarily performing detailed design engineering work.  Whilst we value project engineering skillsets in other parts of our business, this is not a project engineering role.  

You will also bring:

  • Solid understanding of industry standards, regulations, and best practices in mechanical design engineering.
  • Substantial level of skill in carrying out engineering investigations and providing technical advice and engineering reports on all aspects of rolling stock.
  • Structural, Modelling and Analysis skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire team members to achieve project goals.

Candidates at the time of application will be able to demonstrate meeting the below qualifications and employment eligibility:

  • Hold a Professional Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering qualification which is recognised under the Washington Accord or demonstrated by ‘an entry to practice competently’ having been awarded to you by Engineers Australia and accepted by Queensland Rail.  
  • Current Registered Professional Engineer Queensland (RPEQ).

Due to the timeline of the requirements for this role, we will only be able to accept candidates with unrestricted eligibility to the be employed within Australia. 

Location/hours: 

  • Office is located at our inner-city rolling stock maintenance depot at Bowen Hills.
  • Our standard working hours are 38 hour per work week Monday to Friday.
